5 Tips for planning a knock-out New Year's Eve party

Christmas lunch isn't the only thing you should be planning for the festive period. With the start of another year just around the corner, it's time you started thinking about organising your knock-out New Year's Eve party. (If you haven't started already.) After all, is there any better excuse to don a sparkly hat and pop a few streamers? We didn't think so.

When it comes to planning the party of the year, you don't have to go over-the-top extravagant to make it a success. In fact, hosting your New Year's Eve party at home often turns out better than hiring a venue or heading out to a bar. (We all know how disappointing it is when you pay for party tickets and the event doesn't live up to the hype.) But don't worry. This year, we've got a few tips and tricks to help you throw a banger of a bash from the comfort of your own home. Are you ready to get started?

Follow our 5 New Year’s Eve party planning tips:

Tip 1: Every party needs a theme

Pool party? Funky hats? Black and gold? 1920's glam? Whatever you decide, a good party always has a theme. Always. Whether it's a colour scheme, era, specific dress up instructions, decide on one overall theme to set the tone of your New Year's Eve celebration. Not only will this help you determine the finer details of your event, but it allows your guests to get involved too. There's always a fun atmosphere when everyone rises to the occasion. When you send out your invitations, remember to include the theme to allow everyone time to organise their outfits.

Tip 2: Bring it all together with decor

Once you've settled on a theme, it's time to pull the whole look together. It's all in the details, after all. And by details, we absolutely mean decor. Candles, fairy lights, underplates, centrepieces, silk flowers - these little touches elevate your New Year's Eve house party from run-of-the-mill to spectacular. Select decor that builds on and emphasises your theme. You want every piece to complement the overall look. Once you've got everything together, don't stop there, make a custom playlist to keep the vibe going until midnight. Thoughtful party favours are also always a big hit.

Tip 3: Make an Insta-worthy wall

You know what they say - if it’s not on Instagram, it didn't happen. These days, it's rare for an event to go by without someone snapping a pic and letting loose with the hashtags. With your fabulous theme and dazzling decor, your New Year's Eve party is sure to be oozing street cred. But, if you want to take your celebration to the top of the social hot-list, creating an Insta-worthy backdrop is the way to go. All you need is a blank wall and a few decorative touches and voila, Insta-famous. You can let your creativity run wild when putting your Instagram wall together.  Drape a few silk flowers or spell out an inspirational phrase with balloons. Whatever you decide, remember, less is always more. If you clutter your backdrop, it will end up looking messy.

Tip 4: Don’t forget the food and drinks

Every New Year's Eve bash requires a little fuel to keep the festivities going until the countdown, so keep the snacks coming. Whether you’ve opted for a bring and braai or a sit-down dinner, always make sure you provide your guests with nibbles throughout the night. Chances are you're going to pop some champagne at some point, and you don't want anybody toasting on an empty stomach. Speaking of drinks, even if your guests are bringing their own, it's a nice touch to provide a few bowls of punch (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to get the party started.

Tip 5: Get festive

If there is ever a time to get festive, the last night of the year is it. New Year's Eve is not the time to feel self-conscious. Instead, it's the perfect occasion to bring out the party hats and pop a few streamers. Themed knick-knacks are everywhere at this time of the year, so you won't have any trouble finding your festive accessories. But, if you want the jovial atmosphere without the mess, you could also opt for sparklers. Hand them out before midnight and welcome in the new year with a glow.

Well, there you have it. If those tips haven't got you in the party planning mood, nothing will. Do you need help organising the decor for your New Year's Eve celebration? Take a look at our fantastic catalogue of event decor. We have everything you need to ensure your event looks the part.
